Review

Operation Mania is something in the lines of the famous and classic board game with the same name. Of course, the environment of the game is a hospital and its surgery unit (from there, operation). If you are a sensitive person who can’t stand being around blood and open bodies don’t worry and keep reading, because you won’t be seeing anything like that in this game. The main character of this game is Dr. Humerus. Just reading the Dr’s name, you will notice that this game is more like a comedy than like a simulation game. This funny character is arriving to the Heartland Hospital – the location in which the game develops – and you will show him the ropes of the new job and place. The goal of this Doctor is to gain fortune and fame around the world, by successfully healing sick people. This explains why the game map is a globe.

To easily and quickly learn how to play this game you can take the game tutorial, presented in the first level of the game. If you already know how to play, you can skip this tutorial anytime you wish. You will enjoy plenty of games and situations since Operation Mania contains 35 levels (7 levels in 5 different hospitals). While playing the game your primary goal is to successfully cure patients, but there are other secondary goals such as: make money, improve the hospitals which you work at, and as mentioned before, gain fame and fortune.
The game is organized as a basic routine, a series of steps the patients have to go through in order to get taken care and healed. First, the patients arrive to the waiting room, just like in the real life. While waiting there, an overhead icon will show up indicating the place they need to go to be treated. When you are ready to treat a patient, you need to click on it and drag him to the correct location. Once the patient is in the correct location, you have to click on it again to start treating him. This will get Dr. Humerus there and treat the patient. You can make the Dr. a list of up to 5 actions to take care of.
When the attention to the patient is finished it’s very likely that he will leave healed and happy, but that’s not a general rule. Sometimes, the patient’s overhead icon will update indicating that he needs a new treatment. You must be careful so the patient’s health meter doesn’t get to zero. Since it’s a timed game, the level will end when time runs out and there are no more patients left in the waiting room or the hospital. Operation Mania, offers about 22 different wacky maladies, which actually consist in extra mini-games. Successfully completing these minigames will get you bonus.

When you enter the game, you’re asked for a player name and then you’ll see the welcome screen with the following options:

- Change User: the first time there’s no existing player. After you create one or more, they’ll be saved. When you enter into this submenu, you’ll be asked for a name as a new player. It’s possible to have a list of different players and record their performance. This way, you can play home tournaments with family and friends.
- Play Story: this option leads you to the comic-style introduction to the game. When it’s done you’ll start playing the first level helped by a tutorial.
- Play Marathon: the same game but without story or levels, so you just have to play as long as you can.
- Options: this is the menu from which you can set some game options like: sound effects volume, music volume, fever volume, 3D acceleration, colorblind mode, custom cursors, and full screen (on/off).
- How to play: it shows some help information and the rules to play the game.
- Trophy Rooms: where you can see your accomplishments in the game.
- Quit: no further explanation required.

You can try this game for 60 minutes before you buy the licensed version. If you like it, you can buy this game for only 19.95 dollars, right from the Oberon Media Game Center, on the Web.
